High school baseball: Regis Jesuit blasts 13 home runs, sets Colorado record in 21-2 victory
The 2019 Colorado 5A champion Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.) baseball team evidently hit the weight room during time off from the pandemic. Friday, in the Raiders' second game of the 2021 season, they blasted 13 home runs during a 21-2 win at Dakota Ridge.

The baker's dozen is the most in state history and the second highest total in a high school game. Only Atlantic (Iowa) hit more homers in a high school game — 16 — and that was in 1928, almost a century ago.

Oregon State commit Dallas Macias, along with Max Valdez and Charlie Doubet each clubbed three home runs and Regis hit four consecutive round-trippers in the second inning as the team moved to 2-0 on the young season.

More impressive: The game was stopped after five innings due to the state's mercy rule. Ten of the 13 blasts were solo homers.

"It was a really good day to hit and the wind was blowing out," Regis Jesuit coach Matt Darr told the Denver Post. "I have always felt like we would be a really good hitting team this year and that hitting is contagious. But honestly, I have never seen something like that before."

Minnesota-bound Alec Willis, Xavier commit Isaac Wachsmann, Nate McHugh and Finn O'Connor also hit bombs for the Raiders. Regis Jesuit, which didn't play last season due to the pandemic, hit 25 home runs in 2019 en route to a 25-6 record and No. 1 spot in the final MaxPreps Top 25 Colorado rankings.

"It was just an extraordinary performance that I don't think I'll ever see again," Darr said.

The Raiders probably won't repeat the feat Monday when they return to action. Regis Jesuit faces the state's top college prospect in ThunderRidge (Highlands Ranch) pitcher Cale Lansville, an LSU commit.

High school softball: Coaches with 1,000 or more wins - HIGHSCORE
High school softball: Coaches with 1,000 or more wins
The math is simple, yet staggering. Multiply 40 x 50 and you get 2,000. That's 40 wins a year times 50 years equals 2,000 wins. A high school school coach could accomplish that unimaginable feat and yet still come up 89 wins short of passing Jefferson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) coaching legend Larry Niemeyer.

Niemeyer heads a list of high school softball coaches with 1,000 or more wins and his total is one of the more amazing feats in high school sports. With 2,089 career wins over 56 seasons, Niemeyer averaged 37 wins a year. By comparison, only about 30 high schools in the nation won 37 or more games during the 2019 season (the last full high school softball season). He also finished nearly 250 wins ahead of No. 2 Frank Huston, who retired in 2019 with 1,853.

In real estate, there's the old adage, "location, location, location." The same is true for high school softball coaches, and those three locations are Iowa, Michigan and Alabama. Of the 34 coaches on the list with over 1,000 wins, only four came from states other than those three. Iowa has 17 coaches on the list, including the top eight while Michigan has nine. Alabama has three while California, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Illinois have one each.

Sources for the list include the National Federation of High Schools record book, the Iowa Softball Coaches Association record book, state association record books and the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book by Mark and Nelson Tennis. Additions or corrections? [email protected]

Madison St. Rose named 2020-21 HIGHSCORE New Jersey High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year - HIGHSCORE
Madison St. Rose named 2020-21 MaxPreps New Jersey High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year
Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2020-21 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.

Madison St. Rose of St. John-Vianney (Holmdel) is the 2020-21 MaxPreps New Jersey High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The 5-foot-10 junior led the perennial power to a 14-0 record in an abbreviated season and the No. 9 ranking in the MaxPreps Top 25.

Despite there being no postseason, St. John-Vianney scheduled and defeated three of the top teams in the state: Trenton Catholic, Red Bank Catholic and Saddle River Day.

St. Rose averaged 19.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game. Though she's only a junior, the No. 46 player in the ESPN Hoopgurlz 2022 rankings has already committed to Princeton.

Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team.
